Introduction
1. List basic types of power transmission devices and explain it in brief
Ans: Belt drive (belt and pulley) - Torque transfer takes place due to friction between pulley and belt.
Chain drive (Chain and sprockets) - Used for power transmission at a greater distance and is
more efficient than belt drive.
Gear drive (Gears) - Used for power transmission at a shorter distance.
2.Which among belt, chain and gear drive is most efficient and which is least efficient?
Ans:Gear drive is most efficient while belt drive id least efficient
3.One basic difference between bevel gear and miter gear
Ans:Bevel gears are gears designed to transmit motion between intersecting axes. And two equal (1:1 velocity ratio) bevel gears at 90° form miter gear
4. What is rack and pinion used for?
Ans:Rack and pinion is to convert rotational motion into linear motion and vice-versa.
5. List some applications of bevel gear
Ans:: Differential gearbox in automobile, sugar crushing machine, hand drill, printing press, cooling towers, locomotives, railway track inspection machine, etc.
6. Define factor of safety?
Ans:The ratio between maximum stresses to working stress is known as factor of safety. Factor of safety = Maximum stress /Working stress
