Governors and Gyroscope
1. What is the difference in the function of governor and a flywheel?
Ans:: Governor regulates the mean speed of an engine when there are variations in load by changing the supply of working fluid. Flywheel does not maintain a constant speed. It reduces the fluctuations.
2. Name two types of governor.
Ans:
There are two types of governors:
1. Centrifugal governors
2. Inertia governors
3.Define stability of a governor.
Ans:A governor is said to be stable if there is only one radius of rotation of the flyballs for the governor equilibrium, for each speed of the engine within the working range.
4.What is a gyroscope?
Ans:Gyroscope is a mechanical system or arrangement having a rotor spinning at high speed about its axis and being free to turn in any direction.
5.What are different gyroscopic effects observed in ships?
Ans:
Gyroscopic effects observed in ships are during –
1. Steering
2. Pitching
3. Rolling
6.What is meant by pitching of ship?
Ans:Pitching of ship is the cyclic up and down motion of blow and stern on vetical plane about transverse axis.
7. What is the effect of reactive gyroscopic couple when aeroplane takes right turn and propeller rotates in clockwise direction?
Ans:The tail of the aeroplane is raised and nose is dipped.
