Introduction to Engineering Mechanics

1.What is Mechanics?

Ans:

It is a branch of physical science that is concerned with the study of various forces acting on a body when the body is in a state of rest or in motion.

2.What are the different types of Mechanics?

Ans:

i) Statics
ii) Dynamics

  • Kinematics
  • Kinetics

3.Define Statics and Dynamics?

Ans:

Statics is a branch of E.M which deals with various forces acting on a body at rest.
Dynamics is a branch of E.M which deals with the study of motion

4.What is Force? What is System of Force?

Ans:

Force is an agency that tends to change the state of rest or of uniform motion of a body.System of force is a group of forces under consideration.

5.Difference between Couple and Moment?

Ans:

Moment represented turning effect of a force whereas Couple consists of two equal and opposites forces separated by some distances.

6.State Varignon’s Theorem?

Ans:

The theorem states that the torque of a resultant of two concurrent forces about any point is equal to the algebraic sum of the torques of its components about the same point.

7.What is the value of the first moment of area about centroid axis?

Ans:

The first moment of area about the axis s-s is the product of area A and distance. 1st moment of area = A y from this we may define the distance y. y = 1st moment of area/Area. For simple symmetrical shapes, the position of the centroid is obvious.

8. What is the principle of transmissibility?

Ans:

It states that the force acting on the body is a sliding vector.
