: Governor regulates the mean speed of an engine when there are variations in load by changing the supply of working fluid. Flywheel does not maintain a constant speed. It reduces the fluctuations.
There are two types of governors:
1. Centrifugal governors
2. Inertia governors
A governor is said to be stable if there is only one radius of rotation of the flyballs for the governor equilibrium, for each speed of the engine within the working range.
Gyroscope is a mechanical system or arrangement having a rotor spinning at high speed about its axis and being free to turn in any direction.
Gyroscopic effects observed in ships are during –
1. Steering
2. Pitching
3. Rolling
Pitching of ship is the cyclic up and down motion of blow and stern on vetical plane about transverse axis.
